This five-LP box set (which has been reissued on CD) contains nearly all of Stan Getz's classic bossa nova sessions, five wonderful yet diverse LPs (Jazz Samba, Big Band Bossa Nova, Jazz Samba Encore, Stan Getz/Laurindo Almedia, and Getz/Gilberto). The cool-toned tenor is heard on his groundbreaking collaboration with guitarist Charlie Byrd (which resulted in the best-selling "Desafinado"), is showcased with a big band arranged by Gary McFarland (introducing "No More Blues" and "One Note Samba"), stars in recordings with guitarists Laurindo Almeida and Luiz Bonfa, and is heard at the famous meeting with composer/pianist Antonio Carlos Jobim, guitarist João Gilberto, and singer Astrud Gilberto, which resulted in the major hit "The Girl From Ipanema." This essential set finishes off with three previously unissued performances from a 1964 Carnegie Hall Concert, concluding with a remake of "The Girl From Ipanema." These recordings stand as proof that it is possible for good music to sell.

This three-disc set offers useful, intriguing insights into the man and his music. The notes include a biography and interviews with Jobim, producer Creed Taylor, and arranger and producer Oscar Castro Neves. The 55-song collection is organized in three parts: a disc of vocal performances (revisiting classics such as Jobim's duet with Elis Regina in "Aguas de Marco"), a disc of instrumental versions, and a volume featuring several readings, by different groups, of some of Jobim's best-known works.

This CD gives us bossa nova's greatest soloist playing the tunes of its greatest composer, culling every song by Antonio Carlos Jobim that Getz recorded for Verve between 1962 and 1964. The biggest hits are here, including "The Girl from Ipanema" and "Corcovado" with João and Astrud Gilberto's charming vocals, while "Desafinado" and "One Note Samba" appear in both the original instrumental versions with Charlie Byrd and later vocal recordings with the Brazilians. The surprises come with the lesser-known Jobim songs, like "O Morro Nao Tem Vez," a gently keening, minor theme accompanied here by a largely Brazilian band that includes Jobim and the superb guitarist Luiz Bonfá. Another is "Eu e Voce," with Getz soaring in a Carnegie Hall performance. Subtle differences abound in the way the different Brazilian and American groups approach the material, but it's all tied together by Jobim's scintillating melodies and Getz's gorgeous sound and inspired improvisations. –Amazon

Simply put, here are the most successful 14 cuts covering two years in the collaboration between Stan Getz and Antonio Carlos Jobim, during which both men became accustomed to having hit singles. Unfortunately, only one of them got to ride that horse for the rest of the decade - in the United States, anyway. Nonetheless, this material marks the Americans obsession with the bossa nova and was the music that made Getz and Jobim household names for a while - after all, we were just climbing out of the "swinging bachelor pad" music era and still had all those weird hi fi records to explore. Seriously though, the great sensitivity shown by Getz for this material, and the adventurousness of Jobim were a match made in heaven and would change the faces of jazz and Brazilian pop forever. This is a fine collection for anyone interested in bossa, and Getz in this period as well.
