Features – characteristics, qualities, peculiarities. The title of this album was chosen with care. These recordings reveal both the fundamental nature and the diversity of this trio. Let's call it a 'preliminary résumé' then, or an 'interim report'. At any rate the range of musical expression the trio have achieved so far is demonstrated here – with poise, verve, maturity and wisdom.

Global Unity, a landmark free jazz album, is an insight into what was going on in the European free jazz scene at the height of the movement. A who’s who of German and European free jazz players join the orchestra leader, composer-pianist Alexander von Schlippenbach, whose compositions revolve around loosely organized structures, allowing maximal freedom in conjunction with the musicians’ role as instantaneous composers. The music reflects influences from earlier groundbreaking albums from Ornette Coleman and John Coltrane as well as contemporary European classical music.

The Globe Unity Orchestra is not just an ensemble of enormous historical importance to jazz but one which proves the continuing relevance of its self-imposed task. The present line-up, encompassing musicians of several generations and nationalities, lives up to the responsibility of producing genuinely new music, rejecting the commonplace and avoiding cliché, each time they play together. As if to contradict those who accuse the Globe Unity Orchestra (and free jazz in general) of predictability, the golden jubilee at the Jazzfest Berlin was characterised by extreme contrast and high drama, both musical and visual.

For close to 300 years Bach’s Goldberg Variations have awed performers as well as listeners, through an unparalleled combination of a dazzling variety of expression and breath-taking virtuosity with stupendous polyphonic mastery. No wonder then that other musicians than harpsichordists have wanted to make it their own – pianists, first and foremost, but also accordion players and guitarists, flautists and harpists. Having performed and recorded much of the classical as well as the modern string trio repertoire, Trio Zimmermann began working on the Goldberg Variations several years ago, playing an existing arrangement.

Trio con Brio presents its third volume of Beethoven’s Piano Trios: electrifying performances of music which reveals the composer at the peak of his powers. Beethoven’s Op.1 Piano Trios began with two works sure to charm Viennese audiences, but in his Piano Trio Op.1, No.3 in C minor, featured on this album, we begin to hear the radical, uncompromising Beethoven in music of volcanic force, contrasted with a sublime slow movement.

Letting the cat out of the bag right away when introducing a new CD might not be ‘stylish’, but the Emil Brandqvist Trio has honestly delivered a masterpiece called “Falling Crystals” (SKP 9135). Over the last few years drummer Emil Brandqvist from Gothenburg, Sweden played his way into the intimate upper ranks of European Jazz; his trio stands for low-key, picturesque, touching melodies and sounds that remain with listeners. Together with pianist Tuomas Turunen from Finland and Max Thornberg from Stockholm on double bass, one of the trademarks for this multinational Scandinavian ensemble has been that the trio eagerly brings in guests to the studio to put the finishing brushstrokes on their audiophonic paintings.

Waltz for Debby is a live album by jazz pianist and composer Bill Evans and his Trio consisting of Evans, bassist Scott LaFaro, and drummer Paul Motian. his album is widely considered to be one of the best in the Evans canon, and the type of emotive interplay between the musicians that at some points seemed almost deconstructed has served as a model for piano trio play.

The second album by the original Bill Evans group was recorded after the pianist, bassist Scott LaFaro, and drummer Paul Motian had spent a year working together and honing the telepathy that established a new standard for trio interaction. Featuring intimate readings of several standards, plus three compositions from the jazz world that became synonymous with the trio's sounds, and with ample space for LaFaro's virtuosity to shine, the album was cited by Evans years later as among his own favorite recordings. With an excellent performance of "The Boy Next Door" (omitted from the original release for lack of space) and an alternate take of "Beautiful Love," this edition of Explorations contains all of the music preserved by one of jazz's seminal bands on its final visit to a recording studio, plus two previously released alternate takes.

It all began with a postcard. Drummer/composer Guilhem Flouzat was busy planning his next album of carefully crafted songs along the lines of his previous Sunnyside release, Portraits, when he received a letter from his longtime friend and collaborator, Laurent Coq: “Why don’t you record your trio with Sullivan? Just an informal session of standards and easy pieces? I’d love to listen to that.” This meant a complete gear shift. Instead of showcasing original compositions, Flouzat would bare himself in arrangements and preparation, picking songs that he loves and playing them with the two musicians he trusts the most. But how to create a standards album that one would really want to listen to among all the already existing totems of the genre?
