One of improvised music’s most in-demand guitarists, Mary Halvorson has been active in New York since 2002, following jazz studies at Wesleyan University and the New School. Critics have called her “a singular talent” (Lloyd Sachs, JazzTimes), ”NYC’s least-predictable improviser” (Howard Mandel, City Arts), “one of the most exciting and original guitarists in jazz—or otherwise” (Steve Dollar, Wall Street Journal), and “one of today’s most formidable bandleaders” (Francis Davis, Village Voice). The Philadelphia City Paper’s Shaun Brady adds, “Halvorson has been steadily reshaping the sound of jazz guitar in recent years with her elastic, sometimes-fluid, sometimes-shredding, wholly unique style.”

Calling All Mothers is the NRG Ensemble's first album with saxophonist Ken Vandermark taking the place of late group founder Hal Russell, but one wouldn't know just by listening, as the group sounds confident and very much together here. Featuring three tunes apiece by Russell, Vandermark, and saxophonist Mars Williams, plus one by percussionist Steve Hunt and one collective improvisation, the album has a nice element of diversity, yet it still coheres well…

Are we alone in the universe? This is the question at the heart of the work carried out by the SETI (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) community, which has been trying to capture signals of extraterrestrial intelligence with huge radio telescopes since the 1960s. Since 1977, a golden gramophone record has been travelling through space. The Voyager record contains greetings in 55 languages and music from Mother Earth. 30 years later, some researchers even want to load human DNA on a rocket. But this plan is causing trouble. In a worst case scenario, we are inviting hostile invaders to take control over the earth.
